PUNK Graffiti Contest

There were many unknown artists working
for the PUNK Magazine when it started
back in 1976. They were musicians, photographers,
editors, writers, and comic artists;
many of them now so successful in their own fields.
Among them was a Japanese painter,
Makoto Kanaya.

PUNK Graffiti

He was the winner of the PUNK Graffiti Contest held on
PUNK issue #5 in 1976 with a beautiful pencil drawing
of Patti Smith/rock'n roll legend composite image.
And 35 years after the contenst the drawing made
a surprising come back on the T-shirts by Japanese
apparel brand Tee Dee.

Makoto, now reside in Akita, Japan, said he lost his copy of
issue #5 and original drawing over the year. However, John
managed to find and send him a issue #5 as well as photostat copy
of drawing. We are all happy with the "reunion".
